Olight New Red Dot

I received an email today from Olight touting their new 3 moa red or green dot sight. It's cover has a battery in it and will charge the sight up to three times.
Shake awake and light sensing, I think the best feature is the price- $159.
Might be worth checking out.
Regardless what you think of Olight I don't want a built-in rechargeable battery in a red dot. It means the whole thing has a very finite lifespan. I also wouldn't want that bulky cover to charge it which brings me to my next point. How bad is the battery if they think you need to be constantly charging thing and need 3 recharges on hand?
Time will tell but I have concerns.

If you can't easily change the battery - the re-charge option would be a must.
The run time during their show and tell was fine the lowest power setting.
For the price, it might be fine to slap on a 22lr plinker. Esp assuming that their life time warranty is worth something.
I could also see this as an option for a PCP style pellet rifle - but all in the plinking use.
I am not a fan of non-replaceable batteries - the online owners manual has zero tech info on it.

This popped up in one of my social media feeds, I checked it out on the website as I?m in the market for an RDS on my G43X. Cool concept but I would prefer to go with something proven and simple, likely going with the Holosun EPS carry.

As others have pointed out, it' the inability to easily change batteries that I have a problem with.
When you have a removable device that i required for re-charging, you are dependent on that cover to re-charge it. Loose that cover, lose the charge on the optic, you have a paper-weight.

Why is being able to change the battery so important?
You never change the battery in your phone and it is much more likely to save your life.
Frankly I don't like that the life of my phone is essentially the life of its battery. At least that is monitored every day.
It's because an optic wouldn't have that kind of supervision I'd be worried about it. As others said it's also because it's a proprietary charging system meaning when Olight gives up on this and something happens to your charger you're SOL. It's also two points of failure with the internal battery, the cover's battery.
Even the idea of putting it on a .22 or something that will be gentle doesn't work for me. There are plenty of proven budget optics out there. They'll also get you many, many hours with a cheap, easily replaceable battery.

Proprietary charging system. If it was charged with a hidden photovoltaic...maybe I'd buy.

As an example of the whole rechargeable thing, I had a piece of equipment for work that had replaceable batteries. The nice thing was if it went dead and you needed it back up and running quickly you just popped a fresh battery in it and carried on.
That equipment was replaced with a newer version that had the built in rechargeable battery. Now when it dies you have no choice but to plug it in and wait.
If I was trusting my safety to something powered by batteries I want the option to put it back into service asap if the batteries die.
