Default Centurylink Shut Off My DSL - Now Have Fiber

At 1610 today I lost internet service to my home.

I suspect this is because I'm still in copper and haven't moved to fiber, but in my 2 hours of dealing with Centurylink (I know, don't say it), they kept trying to claim it's my modem. All indications on my modem show it's good just not getting an IP from the provider (Centurylink).

I was hoping I could borrow a DSL modem from someone in the Springs area so I can verify it isn't my modem.

    Can anyone assist?

(I won't be able to check for replies after 0530 tomorrow until I get home from work as I don't think I can access the site from work any more and can't have my mobile 0hone at work.)

And, poof...just like that when I got up this morning it was working again.

Since I know I didn't change anything on my modem after going to bed... well, lets just say it's given me more reason to find another option totally not associated with Centurylink or Quantum fiber (Centurylink fiber side of the house).

    Just got fiber internet today.

They installed their own WiFi router but I plan to replace that with my own.

    Recommendations?

We recently upgraded to fiber as well. I needed up going to the following router.

    TP-Link Archer BE24000 Quad-Band WiFi 7 Router

Got it off Amazon for a decent price. Setup was easy and the app is pretty easy to navigate. So far it?s been great with great coverage and it?s fast.

You are gonna love the fiber. Good upgrade!

Recommendation depends on the size of your place. If you are gonna keep one device in the center of the house or if your need multiple AP's for coverage. With a single router/ap combo I like the Synology RT6600. Does what you need and easy to manage, configure and update. It includes some software like IDS, VPN, reporting that are useful. Hardware seems solid and OS is stable. Can later add mesh ap's if you want. Don't get caught up in reviews and spec's like wifi7, radio this, that, the other. Stable, secure and reliable are 1-2-3.

If you want to bump it up to Firewall / Mesh AP / POE / Etc Give me a call.

What fiber vendor did you go with? They keep running fiber THROUGH my neighborhood to the neighborhoods around us, but I can't find anyone to supply fiber to my house (low-density neighborhood - not as much profit).

If you can get your whole neighborhood to sign on the dotted line for service, they might built it out for you

Thanks brother. The Quantum provided WiFi Router is offering me sufficient coverage for now, but it's limited on how I can control it and limit how much Quantum can see everything on my network (the install tech told me using their router gave them complete visibility into all of my devices). He uses an Asus Wifi7 router in a mesh network in his home. I don't know if I'll need to create a mesh with extra AP's (I do have to have one for my Synology NAS as I have to use copper to connect it to my LAN (doesn't support wifi directly), but the Netgear AP I have seems to be working fine still.

I only had 12Mbps DSL service and frankly, since I don't game, really was fast enough for what I do. I'm now at 500 Mbps up/down which is 41.6 times faster. It'll make streaming movies from my NAS produce less lag (which was rarely an issue).

I ended up going with Quantum (their lowest 500 Mbps service) as right now, they're the only fiber internet provider in my 'hood. I looked into MetroNet as I was so pissed off at CenturyLink for just cutting off my service with no warning (they sent me several "Upgrade to fiber" letters, but never gave me a "upgrade by x date because we're cutting you off on that date"). Quantum is another Lucent company like CenturyLink and I didn't want to reward them for their bad behavior. Unfortunately, MetroNet nor anyone else is in my neighborhood yet, so Quantum it was.

They've run the line over the surface of the yards from the "flower pot". They'll be back in a week or two to bury it - I want to be there when they do it as utility locators won't identify my sprinkler lines that I want them to avoid.

So far, the Quantum folks I've dealt with have been exceptional. We'll see if that holds up over the long haul.

ETA: Mod'ing the site (including managing new member sign-ups/dealing with the spam accounts) from a mobile phone for a week really sucked and it's great to have internet in my home again!

Be warned... Buying Huawei, TP-Link, and Xiaomi products may get extra special service and free security and social credit monitoring.

The low latency of fiber is appealing if you're a gamer, but most folks won't notice a real difference. Personally, I just want reliability with decent speeds.
