Removing A2 buttstock. Help Please!

I'm taking the A2 tube off of my Armalite AR10T, and replacing it with a carbine length tube. I have al the details worked out on how to make it run except how to get the tube off. Thanks guys.

I haven't worked on an AR1o, but if it's like a normal AR15 buttstock, there should be a screw in the top of the back of the buttstock that screws the stock on to the recoil buffer tube. Remove the screw and it should slide off the tube.

Standard AR style buffer tube assembly.
1- Remove butt stock by removing the upper screw in the buttplate.(Dont lose the takedown pin spring/detent)
2-Look into the lower reciever where the buffer tube screws in.
You will see a spring loaded plunger and it is the buffer retainer-depress this plunger fully into the reciever and while holding it down unscrew the buffer tube.
3- Re install the carbine tube (Dont forget the endplate,takedown pin retainer spring and castle nut-large cuts on the nut go to the rear).
4- Time the buffer tube-you want to screw the buffer tube in far enough to keep the buffer retainer in place but dont screw it in too far.
5- Tighten the castle nut to a snug fit and stake the endplate/castle nut together at one of the shallow cuts on the castle nut.

Make sure you have a cabine length and weight buffer and spring.

The AR 10 takeDown pin detent spring is verticle and retained by the pistol grip, not the buttstock like on the AR 15. You won't have to worry about it if all you are doing is changing the buttstock.

The buffer tube (reciever extension) is really freaking torqued on tight. MilSpec torque is 35 to 39 Foot Pounds. It may be difficult to get loose. It is not reatined by the buffer detent. Be carefuf not to lose the buffer detent as you unscrew the buffer tube.

The milspec torque on the lock ring is only 38 to 42 INCH pounds.

I just went the other way- colapsable stock to A2 stock.

Been a while since I swapped out a tube on a 10.

I was concentrating so much on looking for the take down spring I forgot about the buffer detent and launched it. Still haven't found the buffer detent or string. Fortunately I had a spare set and they were cheap to replace.
