of course it is pretty tough to get that done when they are 5 miles from camp and 5 miles from the nearest road...just the head and cape are enough for one guy to carry on an elk.

Yeah no kidding, I carried two elk hides over 5 miles of rough terrain. My elk head wasn't worth caring out, but I did take the antlers. I'm currently working on those two elk hides myself(first time, so the're not going to be as nice as the deer hide).

The deer hide cost me $72 to get it done. For an elk hide they charge $144 with hair off, and $244 with hair on.

How long do they usually take?

The place that I had them tanned at took about 4 months. The elk ones I have are preserved with salt and waiting for me to start working on them...I've been to busy to get around to it.

I haven't had one done for about 3 years (of course, I haven't harvested an animal inthat long either).

The last hide I had done (hair on) was an eld hide and it cost me $165 and took somewhere between 4 - 6 months to get it back.

I had it done through a place called Timberline Taxidermy here in Colo Spr. I say "through a place" because they prep the hide and send it out of state for the actual processing of the hide.

wow that isn't too bad. I would love to have an elk hide blanket or something, or make gloves out of them.
If I ever get an elk in a good enough location to save the hide I will give it a shot. I don't think I want to pack one out.
