You were definitely right about it being a LONG read.

I like how the writer didn't directly bash any caliber or come out and say caliber X sucks but caliber Y is the cat's meow. In his long-winded way, he simply stated "this is what I've seen work best and this is what I've seen requires multiple shots".

    Good read.

Agreed. I think his approach and tone are very appealing to this subject and help with discussion. I, on the other hand, am not as soothing with my words. Great deal of info there.

Long read is right, but good info. I've always subscribed to the slow/heavy bullet school of thought, and the shotgun recommendation too. I've also heard that .45 ACP Wadcutters worked well in the self-defense role, and after reading this it makes sense why.

I agree with Ginsue, it was a very well worded piece.

So I've started reading this and I'm immediately confused. This guy keeps saying that he prefers the slow and heavy of .45 over anything else (notably light and fast), but repeatedly contradicts himself by saying that the BEST he's seen is from the 125 gr .357. What is the deal here? I'm only in the first 1/8 or so, but wondering if anyone else noticed that.

Also, can we get a mod to move this to the ammo and ballistics forum so it is easier to find when you search for it? Good post so far.

IE: Is the guy who he says he is or is he a biased keyboard commando. If he even works at a morgue at all, there is some definite exaggeration and bias supplied through the entire article at minimum, as well as extreme "stretching" the truth.

In my opinion: He's one of the guys that hangs out in the towns most popular gun stores that when a customer asks for anything in 9mm, he goes on an "expert" rant about how 9mm can't hurt anything, he's seen people get shot in the face with a clip while in nam' with a 9mm and hardly did so little damage he could patch it with cigarette paper and spit, but his favorite handgun in his collection of three pistols just happens to be the best combination of a self defense weapon for anybody, their grandmother, and their dog that you could possibly ever have, why, it's his 357 magnum, its superior to every other caliber for one reason or another. You all know the type.

Science and facts directly contradict a majority of the elements in this writeup. If you ask me, don't give it any more weight than you would the "expert" ranting of the guy at the gun shop counter. I prefer to trust my life to true science. Now, before everyone jumps on me - there is some logic in it, but an article written on 87% bias and 13% logic is still just some guys B.S. opinion.
