The current admin axed the F-22 due to its $146million/fly away unit cost. Instead we opted for a single engined smaller F-35 which so far costs around $214million /unit. Some of our allies are growing impatient over the delays and cost increases.

Def. Sec. Gates was the one pushing hard to axe that last 12 planes. Congress wanted to keep building them, since they (Strategically) have parts built in something like 46 states.
