The Airborne Laser project is exactly trying to shoot down missiles with lasers. There are some differences that make it substantially more difficult. The ranges involved... atmosphere distorts light, the farther away the more distortion. This affects both the payload (the light energy) and the targeting/tracking systems. In addition, missiles are made of aluminum or other metals that require more energy to defeat.

You don't have to take down the signs. I have a nice, red and gold colored NO SOLICITING sign that is routinely ignored. And I know about the technical difficulties, I was just jerking the chain. But all of this pales into utter insignificance if I CAN'T GET ONE FOR DOOR TO DOOR SALESMEN!!!

It's so much cooler than those radar controlled guns someone brought up a couple weeks ago!
