AK's although quite reliable are not known for their accuracy. It would be a poor choice for a varmint rifle.

Mini's of old were not as accurate as the newer ones. So if accuracy is a determining factor to use it for varmints, a new Mini-14 Target would be better than an older used Ranch. Although I do have confirmed prairie dog kills at 450 yards with an older mini Ranch.

What would be cool is if they would chamber one in 5.45x39 so you could have cheap ammo.
I say lets all remove the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Just remember, Ruger approved of the 1994 assault weapon ban, and provided funding to the politicians, on the agreement his firearms would be excluded from the ban list.

    I'll never own a Ruger.

This right here makes the choice easy for me. I refuse to ever buy anything Ruger has to offer, no matter how great it is.

Id opt for an AR for a bit more. Or get a Polish Tantel or any AK74 in 5.45x39. 1k rounds is $120 at AIM Surplus. They even have ARs in 5.45x39 and my buddy who has one definalty loves it. Good Luck with your decision

I was in the Corps back then. Bill Ruger helped to pass the CA ban.
His "ranch" rife was excluded,,by saying it was necessary for the Cattleman's Association, for coyote control.

The only Ruger I own is a Vaquero .44 mag,,given to me by my deceased father.

    Find a good bolt rifle in .223,a Savage maybe,or even a .22mag

+1 I do own a 10/22, but I'll never buy another one of their guns.
