I was honestly surprised it got all of the accolades. I thought it is good, but not that good.

I enjoyed it and thought it was intense.

NPR interviewed a few military people about it and I thought those guys acted dumb and blew it way out of proportion. The one guy was complaining and said that it wasn't an accurate picture of the military at all. He brought up how the guy doesn't use the robots and diffuses stuff himself. I thought the movie made it pretty obvious that pretty much everything the protagonist does is way over the top and not at all normal. They just don't make movies about people doing things the way they are supposed or events going as planned.

NPR also reported that half the troops they asked about the movie said they knew someone just like that and thought they knew the guy the movie was based on, and the other half said the movie was based on THEM. Including one guy that is actually suing because he says the character is based on him.

I agree. I enjoyed it when I saw it, but I'm not sure why it won the Oscar. I didn't get to see all the best picture nominees this year (I did last year), but of the ones I did see, I would have given it to District 9.

And of the ones not nominated, I would have given it to A Single Man. I bet no one else here saw that

I thought it was ok, you have to expect a certain level of drama added to entertain the non-hackers out there. In the military you learn that there are only two types of movies; 1. Educational, this is how you do your job and not kill anyone else in the process. 2. Entertainment, a colorfull assortment of pictures and sounds, to temporarily distract you from where you are, and what you are doing there.

Unfortunately I have to say it was horrible. Whomever they used to consult with was not very knowledgable. I have 4 tours in the box and have done EOD work, this was just too far out there.

I haven't watched it. I can't get into movies or TV shows about this war.

It was written by a guy who was embedded with a bomb squad in Iraq. Obviously a lot of it is exaggerated for entertainment purposes, but judging by the amount of money it's made I think most of the people who went to see it understood that.

Very exaggerared and unrealistic. It does achieve its purpose though, to get people talking about it, good or bad. Mildly entertaining at best, even with the lead character direspecting the Bn scroll on his shoulder.
