A moan IS a sound that straddles pleasure and pain. You can moan in pleasure, or you can moan in pain.

The Bacchae is a Greek tragedy. A play, written 2000 years ago.

I don't think this performance is what you think it is.

And I don't see the words 'sexual violence' anywhere in the description of the performance. Only in your summing up.

    Ok jake...
I am familiar with the Greek tragedy The Bacchae... are you?

    One 'exhibit'...
Claire Rau’s “Rapine” dangles in the middle of the floor. (Disclosure: Rau was a professor of mine.) A wooden chain hooks into the ceiling and piles lazily on the floor, ending with a black gourd-like object about the size of a bowling pin. Rau explained that the black object, lying so subversively on the ground, is a model of a torture device once thrust into men and women. Today, objects like it are sold as sex toys. The take-home message, however brutal: You can’t have pleasure without pain. It’s worth noting that Rau carved the links of the wooden chain herself, totaling over 20 feet in length.
Moan is an artistic achievement for UCCS. It stews in your mind after you leave; I was still thinking about it the next morning, which is always a good sign. The easily offended won't enjoy it, but no matter what your stance, you will talk about it.

You think you mom would be offended?
Or will I see you and you mother there?
I am not a prude.. I toured on the road as a bassist for over a decade (of decadence) with a heavy metal band...
longer in total with other bands including name acts... so I am NOT some folkesy fluffer.

I did not 'sum-up' without an understanding of the details.
Go ahead... further your explanation / defense of this please.

Yeah, I have a passing familiarity with The Bacchae. I read it and The Frogs at school, along with Oedipus Rex and Antigone was the fourth one I think.

Do I think my mother would be offended? No idea. Knowing my mother, I would imagine her reaction would be indifference. She's not very arty.

Will you see me there? I don't know, when are you going to be there? It closes in a couple of days so I probably won't be able to make it, but if you want to meet up... My mother won't be able to attend though, she lives 4000 miles away.

Thanks for the link that contains a better description of the show. Matt Barton's piece sounds (and looks) boring. Claire Rau's, I would go and see. Twenty feet of carved wooden chain, that's impressive work. I'm not sure I see anything promoting violence against women, though. I remember that in The Bacchae it was the men who suffered all the violence.

    Excellent answer.
The thread was intended to identify and illustrate falsehoods that are perpetuated by the left... and or politicians that facilitate those misrepresentations.
    Art?
    Ahhh...
We all have our own perceptions of art.
    However...
My specific use of this example was to illustrate the use of art, by the left, to dehumanize women.
Addditionally, these tactics are used to decriminalize certain behaviors in order to being about the normality of those behaviors.
Just as the thread topic describes:
    Lies, damned lies and statistics.
I can cite a varitey of these tactics that have been used - to normalize behaviors - that you would certainly be familar with...
Are you going to attend this show?
I may.. just to see if I am wrong.
    I just might be.
(Please accept my apologies for referencing your maternal unit - was not my intention to denigrate or disparage in that respect).

Location: UCCS Gallery of Contemporary Art 1420, Campus Gallery Located in the Science Bldg. 1420 Austin Bluffs Pkwy Colorado Springs, CO 80918

MOAN: Pleasure and Pain. Taking inspiration from a sound that straddles pleasure and pain, Moan features art work in a variety of media by UCCS Visual Art faculty and students as a part of the City Dionysia Festival. A maelstrom of violence, The Bacchae is a potent source for examining the heart of revelry, intoxication, and vengeance. Opening reception: March 4, 6 – 9 pm. Closing reception (with a live performance of excerpts from the Bacchae score): April 2, 6 – 9 pm. Gallery hours: Tuesday - Friday 12:00pm-6:00pm

This sound like something that is promoted by the left...

    Art work?!?!?!
    Sexual violence!?!?!
Where is NOW or any of the other womens groups?
    No where... why?
    HHHMMMM?
    ANYONE?
Another example of their hypocrisy. Big surprise about that. Anything they do is OK, while anything we do is to be ridiculed, at best.

Default Obama says 2 million barrels of oil = 58 million less cars for one year.

So - just some cursory math here... not like any news organization is going to do this...

(EDIT: I believe the number was 2 million barrels a DAY - so recalculate on that figure)

1 barrel of oil produces 19.5 gallons of gas...
    2,000,000.0
    x 19.5
    39,000000.00
    x 365 days
    14.235 billion gallons of gas...

so those 58 million cars must use: 245.43 gal per yr. (to go approx 4,908 miles at 20 MPG avg.)

    14,235,000,000 ÷ 58,000,000 = 245.43

Just over 245 gallons of gas PER YEAR!
That is just under 5K miles per car...
Average annual automobile mileage = 12K (conservatively)
that is still over 7K more than the stated figure...

    MATH FAIL.

Uh... no freaking wonder they are screwing everything up...
    They FAILED at math.

Do you have a link to the actual article? I'm not sure how more oil equals less cars regardless of the math. In theory (and I dropped economics after a year so my theory might be wrong), more oil = cheaper gas = people driving more, surely?

N/m, I found it. It's 1.8 billion rather than million.

And I assumed it meant that offshore drilling would produce more oil but it's about fuel efficiency saving oil so we were both wrong
