My pastor's wife is an English teacher and says she can't read half of the stuff she gets from students due to slang and abbreviated English-probably due to texting.

MichiganMilitia, I completely agree with you about parenting is the root problem. Unfortunately, I've been unable to have kids thus far and try not to speak about things I do not know about. Also, something is that unfortunate is that teachers have to bear this burden and end up babysitting and trying to raise the kids in their classrooms instead of being able to teach them due to the lack of attention/instruction and involvement that is a parents JOB/LOVE (those two words should be interchangeable in this context). I heard a disturbing "fact" the other day: children on general get less than two hours of serious one-on-one involvement with their mother during a typical day. Fathers are less than one.

The ultimate goal of a teacher is to teach the kid how to teach him/herself. Unfortunately, trying to instill discipline/etc does not leave time for teaching... my 2 cents.

This thread has taken a turn, but I do feel that getting these feelings in the open are conducive.

Texting is a symptom, but probably not the disease... I would lean towards parenting as well, if I were given that gift to be one.

I'm sure BigBear, would give me a D+ or a C- if I was lucky..

I was also going to mention that not everyone is blessed with decent written and verbal skills. I was recently asked to check out my little brother's resume, and I cried for the fate of the world the whole time. Many of my science nerdy friends can hardly type out one sentence without a misspelled word. My grammar and spelling has really taken a dive since I've become a forum rat. The way that I write for a forum audience is different than I should write if I were doing a paper or something.

Maybe a "C", but I'd give you a chance to resubmit. At least your typing is understandable without using a crpytographers' algorthymn!!

*teachers voice*: Please see edits. Rewrite and resubmit for a higher grade.

Kidding. I often use those ellipsis marks (...) way too much...

Again, I'm sorry. I've dealt with incessant stupid questions all day today at my work and it's not even afternoon yet. If people would slow down, take a quick second to read over some of the signs posted or documents in their hands, this world would be a better place!

Just to mix this up, I blame you old fuds for the way us Youngsters vomit out an ever evolving and never quite sufficient language. I remember a fine day in a mediocre middle school dealing with a teacher who felt that I was an “idiot.” Turns out, dyslexic, but that is beside the point, the point is, I ended up shutting down to his class and spent the rest of it thinking about the fine looking, acne faced, pre-pubescent females in my class and my totally consuming fear of them. Second point, who invented Cell phones, and there by texting, OLD PEOPLE! Like, Nuff said.

    Additional concept
“Like” being said as a word with no meaning but expressing that the speaker is thinking is found to be bothersome as it is a word with meaning unto itself, this would be a logical complaint, but words such as “Ah” when spoken signifying thought may also be a word, as in “She purchased a new car” in certain accents. And the statement of “ah” is frequently found to be much more…palatable.

Cheers to you young man, the expression of your thoughts, while largely unintelligible, was clear enough, and you served to give a few fuds a few more grey hairs, reminding them that they will in all likelihood die first, and our new bastard pigeon Spanglish will live on. Viva La, like, Engl-eezy!

So, I have to agree with MichiganMilitia and BigBear - in concept - that parenting (or lack thereof) is at issue here. I will not, however, give much of the blame to parents directly.

How can I possibly differentiate between the two? Simple. My experiences and subsequent training in acceptable parenting has taught me that I have very little say or control in how I parent my own children. It seems that if ANYONE takes issue with my parenting techniques and chooses to report me to DHS (that's the Division of Human Services folks, not Dept of Homeland Security), I am automatically guilty and in error. I learned the hard way that it's just safer for me to back off and not hold my own children to the same standards or level of accountability that I was held to. In fact, when all is said and done, I had no way of legally enforcing those standards (Parents are only allowed to "make it uncomfortable" for the child to fail to do as they are told. Even then, you run the risk of inflicting "emotional or psychological abuse".)
