They do that in high school chemistry. I wouldn't know though because chemistry was the only science class I didn't take in high school.

I have seen people make lights and stuff out of them? That would be cool to "silver" one or two for special occasions.

You MIGHT be able to donate them to a high school for slivering projects, but with how pussy schools are now a days, I'm not sure how well that'd go over.
My HS science teacher taught us how to make corn whiskey, but that was in the early 90's. Your probably right they would say no.
