Anyone who thinks broadband in the US is the "best in the world" is on crack. I have tried three different methods, and can't get more than 3Mbps out of Pueblo West. WTF? DSL (business class, best speed), WiMax, and EVDO (cellular) systems all cap out at about the same speed. I use both DSL and EVDO to get reliable network connections. I can't have internet unavailable, it's how I work.
Also, text messages? You're paying the equivalent of about $1300 per megabyte.
There's lots of fundamentally wrong things with all infrastructure industries in the US. A lot of that is due to government regulation, and a lot of it is due to monopolies of various types. Hell, a lot of it has to do with monopolies created by government regulation.
But I would take anything the CEO of Verizon says with a grain of salt. This article you linked is his rebuttal to a previous piece about a study which shows we pay too much for too little compared to other countries.
Don't always make this knee jerk reaction that everything government does is wrong because they've done it.
H.
