gird your thinking gland, this is a long post.
there's a long running fact that a black man can't get a cab in NYC.
why do you thing think that is?
maybe all the cabbies in new york had a big convention in atlantic city thirty years ago and just decide "wow, we really hate those black folks. let's all agree to never pick them up. that'll fix their wagon."
or, could it be that for decades in new york a cabbie that picked up a black man was rolling the dice on whether or not he was going to at best get robbed, at worst get killed. so, instead of rolling the dice they decided that picking up black men was a game that, like global thermonuclear war, the only winning move was not to play.
sure, racial profiling sucks. but everyone does it and it tends to work. why? because all stereotypes, however offensive, are based in truth. this is also why stu got bent out of shape, because stereotypically latino car modifications were listed and he doesn't like the idea that someone might become a target for police strictly based on what is car look like. and you know, I tend to agree with him. nor do I want a country where the police can stop you any time and ask "papers please"
but the thing that sickens me about this whole situation is everybody knows the score. we all know what the problem is and who's causing it. the people that are protesting this law so "peacefully" are pointing at the polka dots and calling them stripes, and smacking anybody who disagrees with them in the face with the race card. stu might have a point if there were half a million polish or somali immigrants all over the southwest as well. but there aren't.
now, I know a lot about illegal immigration. as I have mentioned before, I spent two years in L.A. as a missionary, working exclusively con la gente latina. I speak their language. Many of the people I met were beautiful. Hard working, humble, smart. Trying to make a better life for themselves, and a future for their children. and not just mexicans. people from all over the hemisphere who have fled revolution and violence in their homes. I've written letters on behalf of friends to help them get green cards. I tell you the immigration system in this country is broken. it has become bloated and inoperative, like so many other parts of the big blue federal machine. (that right there is a whole other thread, another part of what's fucked up about our nation and needs to be fixed) but I digress...
I can tell you that along with the hard working that want to be americans there is a large portion of illegal immigrants in this country that don't give a fuck about the U.S.A. let me say that again, so we are clear on this:
THEY DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE U.S.A.
this country is nothing but a paycheck to them. they cross illegally, and work a menial job for crap pay that is many, many times more than they can make in their own country. they make their pay, send some home to the family, and party with the rest. there is a "cat's away, mice will play" attitude. they do whatever they want, because it's not their country. drinking, drugs, driving with no licence or insurance, running up credit cards they never intend to pay, stealing. worst case scenario they get pinched, deported. they just come right back, buy a new social security card at sixth and alvarado and it's right back to business as usual. they bring with them the same corruption and apathy that has ruined their own country.
I've had people complain to me how bad things are for them in los estados unidos. (you know, the "we do the jobs that americans are too lazy and prideful to do" bit) they always shut up when I ask them directly, if things are so bad then why are you here?
I have no patience or sympathy for those that to squirt crocodile tears and complain about [insert illegal alien grievance here]. they can suck a big fat one.
and to the hard working, honest latinos that get lumped in with these lowlifes, all I can say is the same thing I say to black guys that can't get a cab in NYC: sucks to be you.
as Russell Pearce said, "Illegal is not a race"
