right now there's a frontpage on cnn.com complaining that businesses that cater phoenix's large hispanic community have already seen a downturn in business.

    First comment = lol

Makes since you need to be able to read signs if you are driving.

I heard about this on NPR. They pointed out that if you include sign language, there are actually 14 languages you can test in. However, since you don't PRINT those tests, it is a moot point.

    awesome right?

I read it, says "reasonable Suspicion" a whole bunch.. I tend to agree with Stu, if the P.O. is going to abuse his power, He's going to do it with or without this anyway.

Short semi pertinant story, years ago, I worked in a resturant cleaning up overnight. For the most part, I'd get out between 4 and 5 in the morning.
Due to circumstances at the time, I was hoofing it. In that time, I got "stopped" by the police about 3 times. Showed ID, told 'em where I was headed and that was that.. Except one cold night, When the cop actually gave me a ride home..

Did I think they were "abusing" their power? No, I figured they were actually doing their job. I was 19-20 y/o at the time so, yeah, in some circles that could be considered "suspicious"

I think it is probably a notable difference that they only stopped you, and didn't actually take you to jail until you could prove that you hadn't committed some specific crime.

As stated, The abusive ones will be abusive.. The average cop will just check the ID, if it's good to go, they'll be on their way. If not..

If I am completly missing something here, let me know..

I'm really having a hard time believing there are people on this board that are falling for the leftist propaganda regarding this law.

This law DOES NOT give law enforcement officers the power to "ask for papers wherever, whenever, for whatever reason".

The officer will still need to have reasonable suspicion or probable cause to make a contact and query the person stopped regarding their citizenship. The only thing it changes is to make being in the state illegally a state crime now subject to state enforcement and state punishment.

It's not shades of Nazi-ism. Or the old Soviet Union. Or any of the other leftist bullshit like police can "ask for papers wherever, whenever, for whatever reason".

    For fuck's sake...

Not only does it not give police officers more power, it does something people on both sides of the aisle have been harping on for years: it punishes businesses and employers who knowingly hire/employ illegals.

Arizona SB1070 starts this way (emphasis mine):
FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR AGENCY
21 OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS
22 STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO IS
23 UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES, A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE,
24 WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THE
25 PERSON'S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
26 PURSUANT TO 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1373(c).
It also requires immigrants to carry proof they are in this country legally...JUST LIKE FEDERAL LAW ALREADY REQUIRES! HELLO, McFly!!!

It also provides for punishment of officers if they act in bad faith. Such as walking up to a person and asking "for papers wherever, whenever, for whatever reason."

Instead of pissing and moaning about what you "think" this law says, why not try to actually read it:

    http://www.courthousenews.com/2010/04/16/AzSB1070.pdf

This law is the best thing to happen regarding illegal immigration that I can remember in my lifetime. Sorry for the rant...but when this kind of leftist propaganda is perpetuated by people who should know better it really pisses me off.

    Awesome, right?
