Default Second Life - A Rant

I've not posted a rant on this forum, but this is driving me nuts.

So I have to use an online "game" called Second Life to complete an assignment for my CIS class. The point of the game is to create an online avatar, and then go around and buy stuff (land, houses, cars, clothes, ect) and interact with other people.

What an utter bunch of crap! I can't believe that people would rather stay inside and become some fake computer image rather than go and make something of themselves. I want to know what limp dicked losers use this program of their own accord.

I just signed up to complete this assignment, and I can't wait till it's over. In fact, I'm ready to destroy my computer its so pointless and frustrating. Are people so utterly bored with their existence that they need to create a second identity just to feel some fulfillment?

What ever happened to going out and meeting people? Playing frisbee in the park, or just going to the bar to hang out with friends. I mean, if you want to hang out with out your pants on, there are clubs out there for that too, but for crying out loud, get off your fat ass and do something that enhances your life.

What potential benefit does this give people, other than not having to interact with their fellow humans in a social setting? I understand the attraction of playing video games, I enjoy them from time to time myself, but why the mother truckin' hell do you want to create yourself again in another, unreal world?

Does it help you meet women? No! What possible substance would you find in someone who plays this game? A common interest, yes, or a lack of anything better to do, but it's obvious that neither are interested in sex, or they'd be out pursuing it with a real person instead of putsing around in their parents' basement working on their fake career.

Long and the short is I'm disgusted by anyone who uses this program for any period over 30 minutes. Perhaps I don't understand the "new age" technology or anything, but to anyone who would argue with me on this....

You can tell me the benefits or fun of this program, I'll tell you what vag*%# feels like.

Doesn't sound like it's for you. Just move on and forget about it. People do the same thing with games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy. I played WoW for a little bit, but then I discovered going to the bar. Now I do neither.

I couldn't agree more. I've been saying for awhile that folks are losing touch with each other due to some useless technology. My pastor even did a series on this very subject a short time ago. We're becoming victims of the internet, twittering, facebook, blogging, texting etc. I'm old enough to remember when neighbors used to come by and talk with you while you sat on your porch in nice weather. Ahhh the good old days.

you didn't even scratch the surface of the depths this goes to:
real life lawsuits over property rights within the game:

real divorce over second life "affairs":

and class-action lawsuits to the maker over property values:
    http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com...te-linden.html

the only possible explanation is that these people's lives suck so much, and/or that they have social phobias that keep them from interacting in real life...

I don't know the rules- but can you create, say weapons to sell to other characters? make the best of it...

Remember the "Sims" games - same sorta thing. Personally, I only have time for 1 life (and I don't do a great job with that one). Games like this (and even the Star Wars online game "Galaxies" require so much time and effort that it's like having a second job - forget that!

Are you nuts? That would require EFFORT. Plus there is the risk of being emotionally or physically hurt. I'll just stay here in my pod and pretend that this is what the real world actually is.

I personally believe that the downfall of American society came with the removal of large front porches. It used to be that you'd sit out on your front porch and talk to folks walking by. Or you'd be the one walking and you'd join a neighbor on their porch for a glass of lemonade or such.

Front porches went away, we isolated ourselves in our homes - behind the protection of our front doors where we no longer had to share and risk.

I've actually been expecting this since 2004 when LucasArts changed some of the rules in the game Galaxies. Things people had "worked for" were removed and some things became a "gimme" to others. The furvor was amazing - for a simple game.
