U.S. Forest Service extends, expands temporary shooting closure

    Release Date: Dec 20, 2012
Boulder, Colo.(Dec. 20, 2012) – The U.S. Forest Service has extended a recreational shooting closure for the Allenspark dumpsite and ordered a new temporary recreational shooting closure for an area south of Nederland.
These actions serve as an interim measure while U.S. Forest Service officials and other local land managers across Larimer, Boulder, Clear Creek and Gilpin counties work toward a more sustainable, long-term solution.
In April 2010, a closure to recreational shooting was put in place at the Allenspark dumpsite so public health and safety could be analyzed through an environmental assessment. The closure, previously scheduled to end this year, has been extended until forest officials take action to rescind it. A decision on the Allenspark dumpsite is expected by October 2013.
The new temporary closure south of Nederland, Colo. is effective Dec. 20, 2012, until rescinded and restricts recreational shooting activities (hunting and paintball excluded) on approximately 1,040 acres of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. To see map and order please visit: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/arp/re...telprdb5163247
District Ranger Sylvia Clark said, “I am glad we are moving forward with a landscape-level approach. Having input and ideas from counties and other parties involved will be critical to creating more sustainable and long-term solutions.”

no shock there the rangers hate target shooters, and offroaders, and bikes, and campfires...

Actually I think they hate everyone who wants to do anything on 'their' land

Having seen how they are up close and personal years ago I have to agree. I have met some of the good guys on the ground but it seems that any of the people that pass judgment are anti everything.

Welcome to your National Forest. Activities allowed: Watching the trees grow.
I see you running, tell me what your running from

Nobody's coming, what ya do that was so wrong.

I was up shooting at a spot near North Site after I found out it was closed. Ranger pulled up and I began clearing my weapons.

He got on his intercom, instructed me to finish clearing my weapon, place it on the table (I always bring a table), make my hands visible, and walk slowly towards his vehicle. He then gave me a pop quiz on shooting regulations. Then instructed me to stand there until he had reached the road and become out of sight. Needless to say, that was the last time I went shooting in the Arapahoe national forest.

Makes me appreciate the interactions that I've had with the rangers out at Pawnee.

I'd like to find some BLM land that allows shooting and campfires. Contending with the constantly-changing regulations at these near-urban sites removes the fun of recreational shooting for me.

All my interactions with the Rangers in RNF have been ok to date. When they closed the North Site one Ranger gave me a map and help with finding some other locations.
Based on some of the people they must meet I’m not surprised if sometimes they may not be at their best?
