Are you looking for new or used rifles? Typically forums like this one will offer better deals than most dealers. Gun shows are also a good place to shop...
I would say go out, do a ton of research, and build your own.
If you buy parts used you can build an awesome ar, and shave hundreds off the price.
You make it sound like you are only gonna have one!
What these folks are trying to tell you is that it is considered appropriate (proper Forum etiquette) to first go into the "New Member Sign In" forum (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=97) and post an introduction thread before launching off with requests for info.
There's still time - hop on in there and start a new thread for yourself.
ETA (Edit To Add): Sorry, posted this before reading all of your responses. Just because you aren't a CO resident doesn't mean you can't be a member here though - especially since you are an AR fan already. And, with your son getting an AR, he should definitely join this site, so... Once you get him the AR, point him this direction. We promise to look after him for you.
