POMONA - A Marine took the witness stand Monday in the trial of an Iraq war veteran accused of killing a 19-year-old gang member during a shootout in Valinda.

Carlos Chavira, a former Marine who served two combat tours in Ramadi, Iraq, has been charged with murdering Walter Zomoza in a shootout on Feb. 10, 2009.

Fellow rifle platoon member Ritchie Hatch testified Chavira remained mild tempered despite the cramped living conditions and ongoing combat that angered other Marines.

"I can legitimately say I don't remember him ever being angry," Hatch said. "We all like to rub each other the wrong way a little ... everyone blew up at least once, except (Chavira)."

What a BS...! 3 gang members approached his vehicle in a gas station and shot him on the shoulder. The Marine fired back with his legal sidearm and killed one of the attackers. Now he is on murder trial!
