Utah CCW

We're taking a trip to Utah and it looks like they honor our CCW permits but we are going to be spending a week on Lake Powell.

So, since we will be in a park I'm not sure if thats ok or not, do any of you know? If not can you point me in the right direction.....

No problems in UT. Don't think there are any issues in AZ (unless a part of the lake you're going to be in is a wildlife refuge).

The first section has all the CCW info in a subsection. Utah laws are very specific when it comes to interaction with LEOs, so you will want to pay special attention to that part. Have a good trip!

UT no longer requires a person carrying to notify LE upon contact. BCI recommends notifying the officer. That changed in Jan 09, I think...that's when I was there for UT CFP instructor school and it was a new change from the old law of mandatory notification.

There is no restriction for carry in parks (if Powell qualifies) unless you plan to travel into a wildlife refuge (outside of lawful hunting).

UT has a very strong preemption law, too. Their laws on self-defense in and out of the home are better than CO, too. But basically, if you follow common sense and CO law for concealed carry, you'll be fine in UT. UT also allows concealed carry in public schools, unlike CO.

I can't speak about AZ except for what I can find on the web.

I thought no carry at public schools was nationwide. I wish Colorado would get rid of that, but not likely after Columbine. [mad]

Federal law says no firearms in K-12 public schools. So... don't try that. Don't know what Utah State law is but I do know they allow carry on college campuses - which, so do we now on public campuses. Probably not terribly different from us at the moment.

Utah state law does allow for concealed carry of a handgun into public schools for anyone with a permit.

As far as I know, the 2002 Gun Free Schools Act (GFSA) is the federal law that prohibits "guns in schools" (or school zones) and applies to students, mostly. It requires states that receive federal educational funds to establish laws governing guns in/on school property. There are also exemptions for guns used for lawful activities by students. It's even legal to have a handgun in your car on public school property in Colorado.

The GFSA does not generally apply to private or parochial schools.

I could be wrong but I don't think there is a blanket federal law that prohibits guns in schools in states where it's permissable by properly licensed persons.
