Another reason to get training above and beyond some basic pistol course. I think situational awareness is more important than the gun tbh. Keeping yourself out of situations and knowing how to handle yourself if for some reason you get into a spot will do you a lot more good than just thinking you're the man because you have a gun.

Agreed! Did he just see this guy walk up to him and had no thoughts on what this 'contact' could be?

He had the magic wand syndrome Ayoob talks about. Career criminals can tell if your in the proper mind set to kill them if they do something stupid to you.

Another reason why I like to put out the vibe of Don't F With Me! and give dirty looks to people I don't know (except the hotties).

Col. Cooper often stated, after researching hundreds of shooting incidents, that mindset was by far the most important ingredient in "close range interpersonal crisis management" (his words), much more so than marksmanship ability. Sounds like this guy was noodling around in condition white.

I don't have a girlfriend either - it would be VERY bad for my health WHEN (not IF) my wife found out!

Both comments make a lot of sense. Maintain proper situational awareness, prepare for the worst and pray for the best, but always expect the worst.

The mugger was probably thinking, "this guy has no idea what's going on around him and he has a gun, this looks like a challenge."
