I didn't watch his speech, did he say they'd have made progress in 2.5 weeks? Lol! The work they're doing now is a total waste. Those very same beaches will have an order magnitude more oil on them in two weeks.
No one has come out to admit this yet, but capping the current well isn't possible. You can tell by their actions, they've stopped trying to cap and are trying to siphon off as much as possible. The problem is the well casing is broken "down well", below the surface. Any backpressure caused at the BOP now just causes it to gush out below the surface, weakening the sea floor and the sand that holds up the 100 feet or so of pipe that are supporting the 450 tons of the BOP. The BOP is going to start to lean.
