20 rounder question

Just got a pair of CProducts SS 20 round straightbody mags (5.56) from the man in the brown truck. So...I load to 20 and neither will seat with the bolt forward. Download to 19 and they will, download to 18 and it's even easier to seat.

I would assume that this is because of a very stiff spring, but I remember an old, well used Brownells 20 rounder that acted the same...had to really slap it to lock in when full.

So does the geometry of the straight 20's prevent the spring/follower from compressing enough for a full 20, or is it a stiff spring thing that will disappear with use?

Same problem with my Cproducts 20 rounder. I switched to 20rd Pmags--problem solved!

I would trade you a pmag tan (slightly used) for one of yours. I need a metal 20 for highpower singleload follower so I am not concerned with getting 20 rounds in.

I just load every AR magazine full and then take two rounds out to make sure they will seat in the bolt forward gun. Works 100 percent of the time. I've seen people load their magazines full and then have a problem seating the magazine. Even the Magpul magazines have had problems when loaded full to the brim. I had one student tell me he could load his Magpul mags full and would not have a problem. The next time he came up to the line with his full Magpul mags he could not seat the Magpul mag with the bolt forward. Download two and you will never have a problem.

I know about the 18/28 solution, but I figured in the 40 or so years since that practice became widespread, someone would engineer that prob right out...what about making the mag a tiny bit longer for follower wiggle room? Yes I am leaning towards more PMags right now...I haven't ever failed to seat one fully loaded on a closed bolt. I guess I'm lucky that way

So If you have a 30 rd mag and load you weapon properly; there will only be 29 rds in the mag. The only time you should be worried about 30 +1 is in a tac reload. When that is the case slam that thing home. Those 2 extra rds that guys want to take out of there guns can make a big difference in a gun fight.

Not trying to insult anyone but here I go with correct m4 loading procedures.

Place weapon on safe
Log bolt to rear.
ensure chamber is empty
load magazine
Press bolt release and observe rd going into chamber
hit bolt assist

Gun is now loaded.

If you put the magazine in the gun and then rip back on the charging handle you will have malfunctions. Thanks to the movies firearms safety and loading procedures are a thing of the past.

Also in time your mags will losen up a little and you will have less of a problem with the tac reloads.

Downloading 2 rnds is common with anyone who is in situations where a quick and positive tactical reload is required. Trust me those two rounds aren't going to make as much of a difference as trying to perform a tac reload with a full magazine of 30 rnds....only to have issues with it seating or have your magazine drop out of the rifle on the first round you fire. That's going to be a bigger issue than having to reload two rounds earlier.

i have 1/2 doz colt /universal 20 rd AL mags that to date will not seat with 20. not that big a deal on my end.

I've never had a problem seating a fully loaded 20 or 30.

For those who download to 18/28, I'm glad they've got something that works for them.
