it may or may not be a bad idea. but i have painted probably 20 or so of my guns. 3 ar's my long distance gun. xds, shotguns. i havea problem, i know. but I cant leave well enough alone.
Krylon camo works great for metal and plastic. it will say on the can formulated for plastic. the key is to get the surface clean. i use brake parts cleaner. and then try not to touch any surface again before painting. i have had good success with the paint sticking permanently. there might be some gun solvents that might be problematic. but, I have not had any problems
