.308 AR and other caliber questions

Even with a bolt gun, I would imagine it be a good idea to have a 7.62/.308 AR.

So, with all these pictures of people with 20 or more AR 15's... what's the difference?

I know basics such as it would be ideal to have:

1 (maybe two: 1 work, 1 match) - .223/5.56
1 - .308

I know there are 6.8 out there too, but will they do something that a .308 can't do?

So in these pics are they all just teh same calibers or different or what?
I'm less interested in the reasonings such as - 18 inch barrel has more velocity than a 14 inch, etc.

Because if that is the reasoning, can't you just switch out uppers? Why a whole other weapon?

Because I can. Whatever I am in the mood for. Some are justified with logic, some are just fun.

Variety is the spice of life. So that being said you could get by with 4 lowers or as many as you like.
One small receiver with collapisable stock and one with a Magpul PRS stock or A1 or A2 stock
One large receiver with collapisable stock and one with a Magpul PRS type stock

Now you can add all sorts of uppers and configurations.
For Small lower
One 223/556 with 16 inch barrel
One 223/556 20 inch barrel for National Match work
One 6 x 45 upper
One 6.5 Grendell upper or 6.8
One 7.62x39 upper
One or two dedicated 22 LR uppers-
One complete S&W AR-15 22 LR

For the Large lower
One 308
One 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Rem

or any combination of uppers and lowers you like. It is amazing that after you get started, how fast they can multiply

I’m new to the AR-15 platform as well and being in the sand pit means I can’t play with my baby but I can dream of the new dress and shoes I’m going to buy her!

Looking at the different calibers I decided to go with a .308 for my next AR. You can use it for hunting and SHTF. The .308 is popular so you’ve got plenty of sources to get ammo from. I like the 6.8 but its new enough that the rounds are expensive compared to the .308. .308 has the cheaper ammo for plinking and the quality ammo for hunting. A .308 AR for hunting is a bit heavy but you can get a bolt action for hunting and add a rifle to the collection but not another caliber.
Both the .308 and 6.8 can be used for hunting in CO.
From what I understand the troops had some complaints about the .223/5.56 putting down tango’s in CQB and that’s part of the reason the 6.8 came out. The tangos are hopped up on amphetamines before battle so even when hit hard they are still kicking until they completely bleed out or a round in the head. The troops needed a heavy hitting “take them out of the fight NOW” round which was going to be either the .308 or the 6.8

- Cheaper plinking ammo
- Have to buy a new gun

- Buy an upper and mags so cheaper than a new AR – use the same lower
- Ammo’s more expensive.

I am also in the process of adding a SBR receiver to the mix. Put my paperwork in to ATFE three months ago and am waiting and thinking about what shorties I want to build. I will be building a 7 inch 22 L.R. as well as a 10-12 inch 223/556.
I just got done teaching a 223 class to 6 Sheriff deputies from a Texas SWAT team and they all were shooting 10 - 12 inch SBR's with S&B 1-4 short dot scopes. They all hit well at 400 yards with these SBRs and to say the least I was impressed. Great group of guys and good shooters.
