If I'm not mistaken (and a quick search didn't find any convincing statistics, but I only spent a few minutes)

Statistically, the largest correlation to crime is poverty. In non-passion crimes, and according to rational reasoning theory, someone with no assets and no prospects has substantially less to lose. It's a grim sort of risk/reward calculation of the pros and cons of committing a robbery.
