the best place i've been for open camping, guarantee fish (trout) and shooting is Taylor Park. Going the first full weekend of Aug, kinda far but it is so nice. You can find a spot to camp where you won't hear or see anyone.

a bit further out than Fairplay- never been there myself...
but it sounds like the kind of camping that I'm used to (when I lived in Alaska)

    +1

This is my (and my wife's) FAVORITE place to camp. There are some fantastic places to camp just off of Taylor Resv. on the road to Tincup.

The area is beautiful, you can rent a boat from the marina on the lake for pretty decent price, the fishing is good, and most places you'd choose to camp would be really good for shooting too.

While I don't recommend it, you can rent ATV's and UTV's (such as the Polaris Razor, http://www.polarisindustries.com/en-.../Overview.aspx) from the Taylor Park Trading Post, and if you want a restaurant meal, the Nugget Cafe at the Trading Post serves great food for fair prices (I love their breakfast waffle bar). My wife had us stay at the Taylor Park Trading Post RV Park last year. I'm not so fond of that place, but it does have full hookup. To me, it isn't camping when you're side-by-side with everybody else in the camp.

It's on the West side of Cottonwood Pass from Buena Vista. The pass is easy enough to go up and down (paved on the East side to the top, gravel on the West side) and is very scenic.

Just got back from Taylor today. Caught me some nice Brown Trout in a little beaver pond I would've never even bothered with and of course caught some Rainbow up at Mirror Lake (which is stocked). Had a hell of a time.

Taylor's sure getting crowded anymore, though. I saw more people on Cottonwood Pass than I'd used to see total in a week's camping.

Mirror Lake is beautiful and a great drive from Taylor. I saw the most amazing rainbow (super HD in brilliance) last year along that drive.
