To you guys who've been unemployed for so long, my heart goes out to you. Just barely surviving sucks. I hope all of you land jobs and your situation gets better.

No one stays on unemployment because it's lucrative. Seriously, if you're faced with taking a job that still won't pay the bills but will tie you up all day (preventing you from searching for better opportunities) or staying on unemployment and dedicated yourself to the search for suitable work, I say stay on unemployment. One can always take the lesser job when the unemployment runs out. And in this economy, there aren't even the lesser jobs out there. Unless you're an illegal willing to work under the table for next to nothing or an executive with an Ivy League education, you're pretty much SOL.

I just got offered some OJT from a friend that installs networks and computers. I don't know if its paid but I'm sure I'll get lunch out of it. See haters, I can take jobs that I want to do and save the McJobs for illegals with no idea what a Double Cheeseburger is.

I've been having a similar conversation on another board. There ARE people who lounge around on unemployment. However, if you can afford to lounge around on $300-$400 a week, then you obviously don't have a family, and have so few bills that you hardly even need a job. Personally, I'm glad those people are at home and not potentially standing between me and a job. I'm certainly not very thrilled that they're doing it on government dimes though.

so let me get this straight, you used to work 7 days a week, 18 hrs a day, 52 weeks a year at $28.87 per hour PLUS hazard/ combat pay?

IF that were true, you were making over $500 per day, or over $3600 per week, or $189,000 per year. IF that were true, and you are out of money less than a year later you obviously do not know how to manage your finances. at almost $200k i would think you would have saved at least $20k or more per year, and or paid off you home and car, and any other debts. but you were probably like alot of other people, thinking that it would last forever, and if it didnt that you would rely on the government to take care of you.
i use to make similiar money to that. i paid off my house, my vehicles, bought lots of machinery and tools that still make me money. i also funded my IRA's to the max, and had alot invested in the market. i lost everything in the market in one day, $135k. i could have thrown in the towel and let someone else take care of me, but i didnt. i continued to bust my ass making as much money as i could. these days i am doing anything i can to get back where i was, including working for $12/hr when i can spraying weeds. i hadnt worked for that little since the 80's, but i made a pledge to myself last winter. "dont turn anything down", and i havent, i am not going to pull $100k or anywhere near it, but i taking care of myself. $12/hr is better than nothing, combined with cutting expenses to the bone, i will survive just fine.

Wow, this thread seems to be getting a bit personal (maybe even ugly). Let me just say this: no matter what you did or didn't do, I really hope all you guys out of work find it soon - whether you are holding out for something right or taking every little job you can find - you are still out of work and I pray you find what you are needing (and/or looking for).

To each their own, it's not mine to judge how you are unemployed, why you are unemployed, judge what kind of work you should be doing, determine which things you should cut out of your life or anything else. I just hope you get a paycheck.

X2 hope you guys are able to get back on your feet. I still stand firm on my opinions, but it's not my place to judge ANYBODY, and like I said I don't know ya'lls situations, and knowing the upstanding group of people on this site, you guys are the few who aren't sitting on your tail leeching off of the Govt.
