Anyone know of any good places to shoot? I was looking for somewhere to go with few people and super cheap if not free. Anything out there that you guys are aware of?

Lots of free places on USFS land, the ones I know of are all south of Denver area.
The National Forest.

I've never shot in the forest before. Are there guide-lines and rules? Is there any particular method to picking a spot?

BE VERY CAREFULRecreational shooting has been a longtime use of the National Forests and Grasslands. There are no designated shooting areas on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland.
· According to the Code of Federal Regulations (title 36), recreational shooting can take place on the National Forests and Grasslands, as long as:
1. You are further than 150 yards from a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation area or occupied area.
2. You are not shooting across or on a National Forest System Road or adjacent body of water.
3. You are not shooting in any manner or place where any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge.
People are stupid and often will make no consideration for shooters and expect YOU to accommodate them!
ie: riding their ATVs and Motorcycles through your firing lane.

Forest land is great, I do a lot in the mountains in the national forest. Out of courtesy though:
When I go in I take a couple of trash bags and clean up the site. I was just in Arapaho National Forest and the site we went to was a mess, casings, shells and wads EVERYWHERE and so much crap (literally, some guy took a dump right in the middle of the site - and yes, it's human - ICK) that was left behind like cans, bowling pins, glass (assholes), you name it. I filled two 55gal bags to capacity.
- Don't leave your casings, pack them out
- This includes shotgun shells AND WADS
- Pick up your targets
- Pick up other peoples crap too
If you are courteous then the park will keep this great policy of letting us shoot, otherwise they will close areas down or revoke the permission completely.
