What's your opinion on this?

I'm thinking about purchasing a Savage rifle in .308 or .30-06 for camping purposes. I've heard they are really accurate rifles with good reliability that can take down deer and black bears! I've also heard they are horribly inaccurate muskets that break easily and wouldn't take down anything larger than a deer. What is the general consensus on these rifles? And which type of ammo is more common, .308? Or .30-06? Alright, time to let the wise men confer.

Savage makes a very nice rifle. They do things to keep their cost down in manufacturing that also lend themselves to being very accurate. I think they are one of the best bang for the buck rifles on the market. They aren't always glamorous or flashy but they work well. I have friends who are rifle snobs (Sako's and Brownings for them) who say if you need a good rifle on a budget Savage is the way to go. Get one with the Accu-trigger and you'll be set.

Now ammo, .308 is very common because it's a Nato round, however everone's dad and grandpa have owned a 30-06 so the ammo is very common as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either but I think I'd give the availability points to the .308.

Savage makes a good gun for a good price.
.308 or 30-06 will be enough for anything around here. I've killed many elk and deer with an old model 1917 winchester in 30-06.
Ammo is readily available for both so the choice is really preference.

The 3 mule deer I got will tell you it is very capable in .308 150 gr Remmy core-lok at 100, 165ish, 210 yards. I have and older model with the acctrigger and it is sweet, Am just not really into the factory stock looking at getting something diffrent.

i have shot elk with my .308.

i shoot my savage .308 hbar long distance. we shoot out around 1000 yards, and a few times a little farther. look on snipershide.com there are lots of people who shoot the savage rifles. they are fine. can you buy better? yes, for much more money. the triggers are good, and the new accustock, is suppose to be nice as well.

i think maybe the .308 is cheaper to shoot. although, since i reload, i cant tell you for sure. i know its cheap for me to shoot.

Savage is a perfectly good rifle. That said, I wonder if what you're looking for might be better served with a lever action 30-30. Great cartridge, handy, light rifle. It's been said many times that more game have been taken in North America with a 30-30 than all other cartridges combined. Really depends on what ranges you might be considering.

As for camping purposes I carry a 1895 Guide Gun and absolutely love it. Short, small, and light with the ability to throw a huge chunk of lead!

X2, with that said, Savage makes a great rifle, and either the .308 or 30-06 would be great choices.

I've had the savage 110 in both .243 & .270, great rifles. Couldn't go wrong with 30-06 or .308.
