Whatever you do, don't just take out the choke without putting another one in. I've shot slugs through the modified choke on mine. Perhaps just pick up a choke that you know is okay, for the times when you'll use slugs.

Most slug manufacturers and gun makers recommend cylinder or IC for slugs, nothing tighter. I've shot slugs through both and found the IC on Remingtons to be safe and a little more accurate. BTW, the smooth bore 21" rifle sighted Remington 12 gauge barrel I have for my 870 doesn't have remchokes and is permanently IC.

My 870 will not take a choke. It is just straight up cyl. so I don't worry. Still can powder clays with it though. I was always told to just use a cylinder choke for slugs.
