    Default Interesting thing this morning....

I'm in a dead sleep. Around 1 a.m. the wife nudges me awake and asks, "Tim, did you hear that?!" She wasn't sleeping due to a headache. I said no, and sat up and listened. The windows were open and a nice soft rain was falling after the great thunderstorm we had around dinner time. Then I did hear it.
A VERY distinct popping sound. Seven times. Then all quiet. I got out of bed and looked through all the windows and couldn't see anything. I grabbed my CCW, gave the wifey the shotty, and took the dog outside to go to the bathroom and to look around. Nothing. I go back inside and try to get back to sleep. I can't. Around 1:30 two police cars and the apartment security truck light the place up. No sirens, just lights. They patrol for about 20 minutes and take off. I finally succumb to sleep.

What the heck happened? Before I left for work I asked the front office about it, they weren't saying anything. How do I check out any police reports? I assume there is a report since there were two police cars that showed up.

The "VERY distinct popping sound" really, REALLY sounded like a suppressed AR-15.... I'm not a firearms expert, but I really can't think of what else would make "that" sound....

    Any ideas?

BTW, I just moved into this place and it is the nicest place I've EVER lived. Definitely a step up for me....

My wife wakes me up in the middle of the night hearing things It would be interesting to know what you guys heard. I'm pretty sure if it was gun fire there would have been a bigger police presence

I also think there would be more ruckus if it were gun fire - however if the front office refuses to talk about it then perhaps it is. It could be that someone was fooling around with a gun, didn't actually shoot AT someone, but the office doesn't want to freak people out.

If the police came out then I imagine there'll be something on the police blotter. You can check that out, I'm pretty sure they'll have one wherever you are.

In Colorado Springs I've checked it out a few times to get a general idea of what it is we saw happen.

I would think so too, plus sirens, and a bus, etc. But nope, only lights.

I looked around the general area this morning to try and see any signs, nada. No glass, no bent shrubs, no holes, casings, etc.

Neighbor even commented asking if I knew why the cops were there last night.

I have nothing. I SWEAR I heard suppressed fire, I can't for teh life of me think of what else makes that sound, it's very distinct to me...

And if it wasn't, why WERE the two cops there...

Nope, I wasn't up there last night! lol. I'd rather face a bear than some idiot firing who knows where in an apartment complex.

This just says handgun though... It wasn't that loud. It honestly sounded like rapid suppressed fire... I wonder what the background story is. Wonder what sort of handgun. Maybe a .22 in a pillow?... grrr, I'm interested now. 11 shells, I only heard 7 shots. Maybe the other three were the ones my wife heard.

The sounds of gunfire do weird things in urban areas. It can be almost impossible to ID the type and location. There are just too many variables that can affect the sound. Sometimes you can tell, but the further away you are from it, or the more sound barriers between you and the origin, the harder it is to determine anything from the sound. To make matters worse, most rifles when shot towards you have two reports, one from the muzzle and one from the bullet breaking the sound barrier near you.
Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.
