    Default best choice

I am looking for a ar 15, and was wondering what you guys feel is the best bang for the buck. I have my sights set on the ruger sr556, but it is a little pricey. I want the 5.56/223 caliber, and want to eventually scope, and accesorize it. I hate the carry handles. but must have open sights in the mean time. Lets see some opinions

You can always build your own, Not as hard as you may think plus you can make it as custom as you want. Parts are readily available on the internet or through industry partners here. You will also learn all about how your AR operates through building. Here's a pic of my Varmint build last winter. Good Luck

Ask yourself honestly a couple of questions:
    1-What is my budget.
2-What do I want to use the rifle for?

When you answer those two I am sure plenty will chime in and give 2 cents.

Why spend $1400.00 on a rifle if it is going to bounce around behind the seat of your truck most of it's life?
On the other hand if you are planning on shooting long distance P dogs then a 16" carbine is not the best choice usually.

If S&W still has their sale/promotion on the M&P15 series give them a good look. They are great rifles.

+1. After you've lost 3 or 4 detent pins and finally get someone to show you the trick, you can assemble an entire rifle in about 30 minutes...

You might want to try WTB in the trading sections of the forums. Many of us have boxes of take offs, left overs and upgraded parts. I for one have at least three GI trigger assemblies I'll never use...

I believe the Ruger SR 556 is the one with great camo job on it? Or is that the Remington? If your into hunting with it;I would spend the extra bucks to get one with a good camo job;or you can paint job it yourself.Plus they look great on the gun range. But beware of gun solvents like Gunzilla;which is sort of runny, and could destroy the paint job,as with other solvents. If you want to build one I would get either: Rock River,P.O.V.,La Rue Tactical;to name a few;for both upper, and lower recievers.

If this will be your first AR I'll go against consensus and recommend not building one. Stick with a quality factory gun; I don't think I'll be the last one to recommend BCM.

I've been to a few carbine classes, and in each one vast majority of rifles that sh*t-the-bed were home builts and the vast majority of home builts sh*t-the-bed.

    Just my $0.02 worth.

This is kinda like asking what car is best.. Like BP said, what's your budget and intended use. Let us know that and I'm sure you'll get an array of opinions and options.

For your first AR I would not buy a Ruger. It's a gas piston AR and you are gonna pay a lot more for that alone. You don't even know if you're gonna want gas piston or not on your AR yet. Secondly, I would not own a Ruger unless it was a revolver but that's pretty much besides the point. Get back to us on what you're going to do with this rifle and we can help you out.
