More than likely red Loctite or Rocksett used as a threadlocker. Did you try a touch of heat?

I did. There isn't anything different about these RRA LAR 8's in disassemble is there? I see all over the place about part interchangeability but what about the design in the barrel nut or receiver threads? I assume its all about the same!
I just got off the phone with RRA- If this is the free float tube it is in fact red Loctited and it needs to be HOT- 600 degrees or so, just as I thought. I use a MAPP gas torch and get them to where it is smoking and the finish starts to look lighter(this is just the oils cooking off and it does not hurt the finish). I then use a strap wrench so the tube does not get damaged. It has worked everytime for me. If this is the quadrail model it has a jamb nut AND Loctite.
The threads on the barrel nut are standard right hand threads but the nut itself is a proprietary nut and will only fit RRA uppers and barrels.

I'll give that a go. I don't think I got it anywhere near 600.
