Default Guy shoots self in foot with shotgun

Here is the thread. I don't know if you have to be logged in to see it or not.

    Gross picture at bottom.

The story is the poster's brother works with the guy that did this. I guess they are both fireman. Anyway, this guy was packing up his stuff to leave, picked up his 12 gauge, pumped it three times (thinking about the hunting plug). Set it down, wiped it down, picked it back up, aimed at the floor between his legs and pulled the trigger. Took most of the shot (I think bird shot) in the left foot. At first doctors said they might have to amputate it. I guess the guy was screaming about the pain so much that he was begging them to take it off anyway.

A few days later, the docs took the foot off below the knee. Poor guy. As per the usual internet standard, everyone on there just lamented about how stupid they think the guy is. I feel bad for him.

Oh yeah, and I thought it hurt when the diving board smacked me in the top of the foot today and made me bleed.

I just unloaded my shotgun tonight, a few hours before reading this thread. I distinctly remember using the same method to unload the gun, but specifically checking that the chamber AND magazine were empty; more than once. In fact, I checked the gun each time I picked it up. I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I guess I've developed the appropriate habit and am glad that I did.

OUCH!! That sucks something fierce. I have a friend in AZ who unloaded his shotgun before cleaning it. Or so he thought . . . . He had it resting on the floor between his legs pointed at the ceiling. BOOMSTICK! He blew a hole in roof. Lucky SOB right there.

I'm sure your reverse Louganis did hurt. Just nothing like this poor dude's foot. I can't imagine . . . .

You know, I know accidents can happen to anyone but you generally only get one chance to get something like this wrong, it's worth being very careful at the risk of being overly careful to ALWAYS check the pipe no matter how empty you think it is. The thing that gets me is that he pointed it between his legs and pulled the trigger, I wouldn't really consider THAT a safe direction. I feel for him, but that wasn't his shining hour.

Since when do you pull the trigger to see if a gun is loaded ??
Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to Fight, he'll just kill you.

    That's what I was thinking!!!

He probably just (not) unloaded it and pulled the trigger to reset the spring since he pumped it so there wasn't any tension on the fireing pin... eh, who knows.

Must be one of those new fangled unloadin and checks systems.

I don't like the new ones much. I prefer to Unload the weapon, physically and visually verify the weapon is unloaded and then STILL treat it as if it might go off.
    It's worked for 33 years.
