question on using duty gear

I have a friend who will be attending and shooting IDPA for the first time on Sept 11 at the Clear Creek IDPA Match. He is active military and set to be deployed again in May. I recall it being said that military are encouraged to compete in their duty rigs but his pistol is carried on his flak jacket on his left side (similar to an appendix carry) and I wasn't sure if he would be allowed to use this rig?

Sorry no one has tried to answer your question and this is not official since my only standing is as an SO.
You are correct that every courtesy is extended to LEO/Military RE duty rig use as long as it does not compromise safety issues. For example your friends rig would not be permitted if it in anyway could be considered a cross draw. Police helicopter pilots commonly wear horizontal shoulder holsters, visualize standing behind that with the barrel pointed straight at you and the amount if sweeping required to get that pistol on target. It would be the MD's call, but don't expect to use any any rig that deviates from the IDPA safety rules.

Shoulder rigs, cross draw, SOB holters will probably not be allowed by Roger. Good strong side holster of some sort it the way to go anyway.

On a different subject... last match they put all the new shooters in one group. Since my brother and my friend are both new shooters I was hoping I would be able to shoot with them. Any idea who I talk to to try to make that happen?

I bet if the new shooter class isn't too large it will be no problem if you just ask when you sign up. Or just tell them you are new.

Check out the IDPA Rule Book pages 34 and 35. And yes, like Stuart said, talk with the MD before the match. They will inform you of the holster rules. Have fun shootin!
