Im with Tim. Remington in 30-06. Better selection of heavy bullets.
Dragging a heavy barrel 308 around the mountains would blow goat.

You know I like my coffee sweet in the morning
and I'm crazy about my tea at night
I was actually going to ask what the primary purpose was going to be.
if its going to be a paper-puncher, The heavier barrel wont be an issue.
If its a Zombie Killer and hes going to be stationary on a roof, Its preferred.
But yeah, if you are going to be packing that around chasing Bambi's mom... sucks to be you

Best buy:I would go with the Savage in 30-06.It's an out of the box rifle, that shoots small groups. For Elk,go with the 30-06 & check out Hornady's new faster propellant ammo, with no increased recoil. If you have a bigger wallet, I would suggest a SAKO , pronounced [ socko ] MODEL 85, in 30-06.![]()
I have a Savage (.300 Win Mag) and three 700's (.30-06 and two .308's). The Savage gets the nod for price, but it also won't be worth as much later, either. Honestly, I'd get the best I could afford. The Savage is a good rifle, I wouldn't say anything against it, but if I had to choose one it would be the Remington. Purely personal preference on my part. The Savage barrel system is only a real advantage if you plan on changing barrels. The bolts on my 700's are smoother than the Savage, and the Remington has a cleaner look (I think). There's plenty you can get for a Savage, but there isn't anything you can't get for a 700. You'll notice that you don't see custom rifle builders using Savages to build on, but they nearly all offer 700-based rifles. Just my .02!![]()

I have a Savage model 10 tactical with a Burris XTR 3-12 scope that shoots 1/2 moa. Very accurate out of the box. A very good rifle for the price and I have been very satisfied with it so far. Most people complain about the loose feeling bolt but that doesn't matter because of the floating bolt head. In my opinion it won't jam up when in the elements. I guess if you aren't concerned about resale value, which I'm not, I think Savage gets the nod.
Here is mine in lefty config. No extra charge for lefty.
Accustock, Accutrigger, heavy fluted barrel with muzzle brake, Harris notched bipod, .308 caliber. Rifle alone was $850. XTR scope illuminated mil-dot reticle $850, rings and bases free.
