I wouldn't go below a 18.5". Someone needs to make a 20" barrel for it.

Depends on what your ideal rifle is used for. If you want the accuracy that a M1A can provide then 22" is the way to go.
OTH-If it is a SHTF rifle than either of the shorter ones may be more appropriate.
I recall reading someplace that in a .308 for every inch you lose of barrel you give up 100 FPS with 20" to 24" being the best to utilized the rounds potential.
Dont know the accuracy of that statement though..........

Let's use your new rifle to find out!

First, we'll cut down the barrel until we see a degradation in performance.

I'm thinking we remove barrel length in half-inch increments for the ultimate in precision.

Once we see ballistics start to suffer, we simply reattach the last removed half-inch piece of barrel.

Get what you can afford of decent quality in any of the bbl lengths. Make sure you include your mag cost when u sit down and think about it. Also, as R&S stated, you need to be aware of feeding your bad habit.

For me, i'm fal based, makes no sense for me to spend 2200$ on a m1a set up, when i can get a RRA 308 for 1400, and continue to use fal mags.

For me, mag cost always drives the decision. Magpul mags for the ar10 platform are about 20$, same price as decent m1a mags.
