    Early Radio-Plane Target Drone pictures.

I'm guessing these were taken in the late 50's or early 60's. The Radio-Plane Target drones were used from WW2 and into the 1960's. Many versions had parachutes installed, to salvage the drone for re-use if it wasn't shot down at the end of its flight.

One of the pictures shows two Airmen standing by a wrecked drone, notice the 2 aircraft tail turrets behind them. Looks like Boeing B-47 radar controlled twin 20MM guns! Click image for larger version.

Can't remember if I've posted this here before, but this is what our grandson works on in the Navy, an E6-B Mercury - the "Doomsday Plane". Refurbed and modified Boeing 707's. Primary mission is to be a comm link between submerged nuke subs and land. There's a 5 mile long cable antenna that trails out behind the plane, and a shorter one too. Cody's job is to operate the cable reels & winches, he's also the cook for the 18-man crew.

But these planes also have the capability to launch nuke missiles from land missile sites, as a last-ditch measure if land launch centers were somehow disabled. Extremely low chance of that ever happening, but there it is.

I took this picture this afternoon after going for a ride in the jet. Bonus points for anyone who can properly identify all the flying machines in my friend's hangar. I've removed the registration numbers to keep from making it easy and to obscure my buddy's identity.

Went to see the B-29 at Centennial Friday and ended up taking a ride in this 1943 Twin Beech Navy trainer. Photos taken by relative when we flew over thier house in Roxboro. Good ride and cheap!!!
