Because they hurt like a son on a gun and at close range can open you up to the point where you need stitches.... that's why there is fear of getting shot.
My favorite thing to do in simunitions training is shooting people in the forehead of their face shield and "hindu" them as I call it.

BTW, I am not aware of anyone other than LEO or Military that are allowed to buy these anymore.

I'm pretty sure that Coloccw runs a class like this. He just advertised for it last month.

We offer an adnvanced CCW class with the last half of the class utilizing UTM converted firearms. (Like Simunitions but civilian use allowed). check out the website @ www.ColoCCW.com or pm/email me for more info.

Used them for tyraining when I played cop for the Air Force. We had a CSPD officer who was also a Reservist AF cop who was working on our flight. He brought in the CSPD simunition guns one night for serious training. We all wore our Second Chance vests on the outside and wore face shields on our kevlar helmets - this guy did NOT.

The last exercise of the night he played a suicidal man who was looking for the "suicide by cop" type of deal (had a gun to his temple). My partner was trying to talk him down but I was lined up on him in case he made a wrong move. Quicker than the blink of an eye he dropped the weapon from his temple and shot my partner. I fired. Even though the USAF doesn't teach it, I double-tapped him (remember, no safety gear?). The first shot caught him just below his right armpit. The second shot (I was coming down from muzzle lift) caught him on his bare neck. Even though I was 10 feet away, he dropped like a rock and had a HUGE whelt with a little bit of skin laceration (we were both lucky!). Of course, the exercise terminated and I checked him out while apologizing vehemently. The guy actually told me it was alright and I did what I should have done. I still feel guilty. In my mind, that scenario was not an exercise but was a real world event. It at least answered my question: If I have to actually shoot someone, can I do it and do it without hesitating? The answer was YES.

If you get an opportunity to train with even the civilian authorized version of simunition, do it!

Bringing back an old thread since I couldn't find any other relevant posts on simunition. Anybody know if there's truth to the LEO/Military access only statement? I've used it in the AF/JSOC world and yes.. it hurts.. far worse than paintball. I had a round cut the side of my head pretty good and CQC was aweful. Anybody else used it?

Simunitions can only be purchased by LE/mil. All authorized Simunition traininers must sign contract that their products will only be used for LE/mil training.

UTM is available for civilians however due to minimum ordering requirements ($12K+), only larger training organizations will have them. No way to order 1 conversion kit and a case of ammo unless you are set up with them and have already placed the minimum order.

Travis Haley uses UTM in some of his classes. This past summer they did two simulations in a 4 day class. They hurt like hell. First simulation was we had to run through the woods to stop a school active shooter. BG caught me by surprise and shot me in the gut. I went down fast. Second run was a hostage situation. While running to where the hostage was Travis Jr. shoot me in the weak hand making my hand useless for a few minutes. I finally got the BG and didn't break my ankle (inside joke.) I guess my point is: it would be hard to put together a long class if you being shot with these things. I have scares to prove it.
