You do know there are different degrees of the Amish? I grew up around he Amish,my Grandfather was a vet,and was often of to help them. Either with a down horse, difficult calving,or other problems. Almost always paid promtly, mostly with food,,goods{quilts, and wooden}, as well as cash.
They taught him to make GREAT wicker seat/backed rockig chairs.
Sure they were not Menanites? or Quakers?

"Technology is generally where you will see the greatest differences between Amish orders. The Swartzentruber and Andy Weaver Amish are ultraconservative in their use of technology - the Swartzentruber, for example, do not even allow the use of battery lights. Old Order Amish have little use for modern technology, but are allowed to ride in motorized vehicles including planes and automobiles, though they are not allowed to own them. The New Order Amish permit the use of electricity, ownership of automobiles, modern farming machines, and telephones in the home. "

EXACTLY. I purposely tell my girlfriend that the time we need to be somewhere is 30-60 minutes before we need to be there because I know she will cause me to be late otherwise.

Great gal otherwise, just never learned to tell time

I may not always be on time, but I hardly ever, EVER miss a day of work.

To top it off too, was definately overpaid for the position. B/c they couldn't adjust to making less than before

Well anyway, sometimes I work day + nights on occasion.. you know, 16, 18, sometimes 20 hours.. And.. there is a back door and a back parking lot. That means, when I see someone drive up the front, it's time to go home out the back. They show up with no clue I was just there three minutes ago... and I check in later and low and behold they are clocked in two hours before they got there. So, that person no longer works for me. thats been about ~4 months ago.

As an employer, give everyone just enough rope to hang themselves with, and secretly check in. It's the only way to separate the good from the bad.

Lastly, limit temptation. Even medocre employees can be good employees if they simply don't have the ability to screw everything.

If my employees called in with a BS excuse, or none at all, I let them have that day and the next day off too.

Basically (VERY basically) the different Amish tenents are present for just a simpler way of life so that they can commune with their God without the wordly temptations and distractions. There are some Amish "tribes" (for lack of a better term at the moment) who do allow certain technological advances such as phones, to make their lives a little more conveinent and to tell spread their faith and way of living. Amish folks are some of the best people I've ever met, and I've meet a lot of people in my short life, from Aboriginals to true Africans to Russians to Native Indians. Very sincere people. However, I doubt you'll ever find a Amish sect with an Xbox any time soon. lol.

Rgr that. My Grandpa always said, "If your early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late." This from a man that was in the feilds working at 4 a.m. and didn't get to bed till 11ish... Man, I miss you grandpa... RIP.

Character, ethics, intergrity, standards, etc seem to be on the downward trend. But we've had that discussion. People used to think "Is it right and will it help," but now they think "can I get away with it and how much will I make". Sad but I feel it's true.

The very fabric of our country is being torn apart due to the loss of fundamental standards.

I'm moving towards "Results Only Work Environments" (ROWE) where you don't have a set time of any kind. As long as the work is done, when you do it doesn't matter. Productivity skyrockets. Obviously, not all projects can be done this way, sometimes you need to work with a large group of people which requires semi-standard working hours (depending on their TZ)... but it's increasingly uncommon.

Also, telecommuting saves me ~1.5 hours every day, countless miles on my car, much cheaper/better lunches, better office facilities. I can't really see myself going back to work in an office.
