I was a sophomore in High School in California, and all I was thinking about was my motorcycle and girls. (Not necessarily in that order!) At the time I was still sure I wasn't going into the military under any circumstance. Yeah, and almost 24 years later...

Sometimes it does not seem that long ago. I was 21 and tired of being a line wrench at a Lyman Slack Chevrolet in Portland. So on August 14th 1980 I got on a plane to Ft lost in the woods.

12 years later they offered me $40,000 not to reenlist and a job as a civilian. Now, just over 30 years after it started I have a few more to go.
