My Good Fortune, I thought I would tell you about it.

Ok, we dont watch television. Sometimes, I will hook it up and watch "This old house" or "hometime". Lately, I found chanel 3 out of Sterling. And they have "Get SMart". Otherwise we dont watch broadcast television. But, we do have movies. And I have lots of Old John Wayne, Roy, Gene, Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye, Gene Kelly, Fred Estaire, Esther Williams, Bob Hope, etc. (you get the picture). SO, all we have is a 25 year old 20 inch television. We could have bought a bigger tv, but it seemed a waste of money. So, 2 years ago, my mom bought a Samsung 40" HD lcd tv. It worked for just a year. Broke right after the warranty expired. She called around and the quotes to fix it were astronomical. So, she put it away, thinking someday to get it fixed. Well she never did. So, I was reading on the internet about the Samsung tvs crapping out. It said, it was just the capacitors on the power supply board. And they were cheap and easy to replace. My wife stopped at Radio Shack on Friday and bought me the capacitors. They were $1.79 a piece. It took 2, and now I have a free big tv. I know, you dont care, but I am happy. Now I dont have to use my binoculars to watch it.

Glad you were able to get it working again! Its nice when simples things fix stuff! If only this country needed a couple capacitors replaced we would really be in business!

Great job. I once threw away a 22" flat screen monitor for my desktop, only to back inside, find out that it was a simple fix, and have it be gone from the dumpster hours after I had tossed it. That really sucked.

the capacitors were visually swollen on top. i should say, i have never soldered a circuit board before. i have soldered wiring on my harley, truck, etc. but not anything like that. i was suprised i didnt screw it up.

The capacitor problem never really made the news, but has caused a lot of frustration for the last 10 years. If you don't know the story; Guy stole the formula for making the capacitors, sold it to another company and they cranked them out by the millions. Turns out the formula is bad. After a period of time the capacitors GAS too much and cause the case to bulge and leak.

Recently my Satellite receiver quit working, cracked the case on it, same thing. Power supply caps leaking.

I just wonder how many millions of devices are being tossed over the years due to this problem? And what types of devices? TV, Computer, Appliances, Medical Equipment?

Had a boot load of Dell workstations at work that had this same problem. Given that they belonged to Uncle Sam and they have strick policies on working on equipment on this level, I had to get them all replaced. they were older and junk anyway so I was glad to get them replaced.

Of course, the replacements were still used dell workstations that were just one model up from the ones I replaced. Good ole Uncle Sam.
