Whats a good brand and model, low cost tactical light?
are the Cree or ultrafire lights any good?
some say 240 and 300 lumens are they really that bright?
Brighter then my stinger led flashlight?

Surefire is the most notable brand, offering a plethora of options. The most common is the G2 (about $35-40, $50 for LED) and can be used handheld or mounted on weapon systems using basic 1" scope rings.
Check out Phenix as well if you want to go cheaper.

X3 on the Fenix. I just picked up the LD10 a few weeks ago, as my daily carry light, and let me tell you, it is awesome. Small, yet packs a punch. Fits in my back jean pocket, and I can't even tell it's there. The differing brightness levels are a must for me, and the fact that twisting the bezel of the flashlight, takes you directly from the lowest output, to the highest, much nicer than having to click your way thru the different modes. Highly recommend this light, it can be purchased at Army/Navy surpluss off of broadway. They also have a couple other Fenix models.

I thought I would be skewered because Fenix is Chinese.

FYI - I just looked at the new G2 mount that Mount and Slot had at the gunshow, looks really cool and well designed. I'll look into putting one on my ar.
I too bought a Fenix LD10, met a guy at my local range that is a rep for Fenix Outfitters (or something like that). $55 and this thing is awesome! I JUST replaced the battery on it after 5 weeks, and guess what? It uses standard AA batteries. I use my rechargeable 2600mAh batteries and use it daily (I work at an observatory, moving around a telescope when lights are out and at night too).
Define inexpensive? Define how much you feel you will have to rely on the light.. Lights are kinda like optics. Most do the same basic thing, but the higher the price (and the more reputable the manufacturer) generally the better and more reliable the light (and optic) will be. Candlepower forums has a head jarring amount of information that stretches beyond "Hey SureFire rules" or 100 lumens isn't enough..
A good reliable and common configuration is as noted previously, the SureFire G2LED with any number of 1" mounts. The G2 is more or less an industry standard both for quality, reliability and form factor. There are good reasons for that. I"m not bashing Fenix, Streamlight, Olight or any number of the other fantastic manufacturers out there.. the G2 is just a good starting place.
