    Default Denver 10rnd cap

When I was in my ccw class I was told to avoid things like the XD9. Due to the sub compact having more than a 10 round mag. Thus if one were to reside in let's say Lakewood. Where I guess it is okay to have the 13 round mag, then venture into Denver, maybe get pulled over for speeding or even just receive help from changing a flat. A Denver officer could confiscate your weapon for having a hi cap mag?

Can get a straight answer. Are there any officers here that could clarify.

Denver's cap is 20 rounds in a magazine, so you're ok. The assault weapons ban states that semi-auto weapons (minus .22) cannot have a detachable magazine with 21+ rounds in it.

I'm pretty sure that's spot on, can anyone else confirm?

    1) Assault weapon shall include all firearms with any of the following characteristics:
    a. All semiautomatic action, centerfire rifles with a detachable magazine with a capacity of twenty-one (21) or more rounds.
    b. All semiautomatic shotguns with a folding stock or a magazine capacity of more than six (6) rounds or both.
    c. Reserved.
    d. Any firearm which has been modified to be operable as an assault weapon as defined herein.
    e. Any part or combination of parts designed or intended to convert a firearm into an assault weapon, including a detachable magazine with a capacity of twenty-one (21) or more rounds, or any combination of parts from which an assault weapon may be readily assembled if those parts are in the possession or under the control of the same person.
From the Denver Municipal Code. Basically, magazine capacity only enters the equation in the case of rifles and shotguns. You can carry a Glock 17 with a high capacity mag and still be within the law.

    Edit: Gray area found:
    (i) Specific magazine prohibited. It shall be unlawful to carry, store or otherwise possess a magazine which will hold or may be modified to hold twenty-one (21) or more rounds.

They don't specify rifle/shotgun in this section, so 33 round Glock mags are in the gray area.

What class was it? Probably some other questionable stuff taught in that class if they told you this. Anything else they say that sounded a little "off"?

Oops, I moved into Denver county a few months back. Good thing I lost all my mags in that boating accident.

Not surprising it was Prairie Arms. Look at the threads here about them to see what most people's opinions of them are.

Even if you had something that qualifies as an assault weapon in Denver, aren't you protected by federal law if you are just traveling through town? (flat tire or traffic stop does not change the fact you are in transit elsewhere)
