And second comment is true! If memory serves correctly, it's actually a pagan Druid ritual/tradition celebrating the refreshing and newness of Mother Earth by the changing seasons and the life giving energy of teh sun that was taken over by Christians to celebrate the birth of Christ (which by most accounts was probably NOT born in our traditional December).
more along the lines of the winter solstice.
it was originally a celebration of surviving the longest night of the year and everyone knew that the worst of it was over, so to speak.
