A young man is dead, and the Las Animas County Sheriff believes it's an accident. They say the young man dropped his gun while shooting prairie dogs, and shot himself. It happened in Eastern Las Animas County.
Emergency crews flew the juvenile to a hospital in Pueblo, but he died tonight.
This is a reminder that all it takes is a moments carelessness to result in tragedy.

RIP to the careless "young man" victim and prayers to the "young man" and his family.

Hope it wasn't a 12 year old. My kids think I'm a bit harsh about safety when we go shooting; I tell them I'd rather hurt their feelings a little and have them remember what to do and not do. I want them to enjoy shooting (which they do) while knowing that all they have to do is let down for a second for something bad to happen.

+1... Not a kid, but sometimes I have to remind friends of the rules and all.

I am the same way with my son. I am glad I am not the only one.

Nope, thats how I raised my kids with guns. THey sometimes thought that dear ole dad was a bit excessive with the rules and correcting them when they did something unsafe, but they're still alive and now they won't tolerate anyone around them with a firearm not following the same rules.

THe incident that ultimately got Rampart Range closed is a perfect example of this. A guy accidentally shot and killed his friend. While the incident was ruled an "accident" because the gun he had was found to be defective, if the guy had maintained proper muzzle control (not pointing a loaded gun in the direction of another person), his friend would still be alive and well today.

It's easy enough to claim "accident", but being ever vigilent of the possibility of something going wrong by following basic safety rules keeps everyone safe.
