Default Has anyone used this surplus powder?

Surplus Military Gunpowder/WC 844 Pull down - (Cross reference loading data for H335) from Hi Tech Ammunition. I was thinking about doing a group buy. If I buy 4 - 8 lb jugs it comes out to $90 each shipped. They don't charge Haz mat fee if we buy 4 jugs. I have no idea if this is good powder but wouldn't the military use good powder? But how old is it and how was it stored? http://www.hi-techammo.com/

I bought some and haven't gotten out to test my starting loads yet.
I'll let you know when I shoot it.
It looks perfectly clean and it's spherical powder so it meters well.

I have used it before. Meters great, but it can be dirty and temperature sensitive.

Try using a magnum primer to help lighting off that powder. It helped my long range accuracy.

Thanks for the replies. Hoser I have some lake city brass coming with lake city primers in it all ready so that might work good huh? Any other users or interest in going in on a buy?

I am down to 7 of the 16lbs I bought from pat's 4 years ago. In my case (and lot) it was a direct swap for the H355 load I was using. I use CCI41 primers for it and like I said after all was said and done it was identical.

Every lot has it's own characteristics so YMMV. Unless severely abused gunpowder has a very long life. I am just finishing up half a can of W748 for plinking .308 rounds that I bought 5 years ago and was MFG in the 70's and stored god knows where.

I think if you filled the case and carded it off, then jammed a bullet in there you might get 2200fps with allot of unburnt powder rolling out of the barrel.

    WAY TOO SLOW.

It is good if you have a 55gr Blc2 or H355 load that your gun likes. I know some HP shooters that did not have good luck with 69 and up pills. I tried some of the WC846 in .308 and my Fal hated it.

If you want drop me a PM and you can try 1/4 lb before ya buy a bunch.

I do not think it would cycle the gun.

I think I got off track. We were talking about .223 and now going back I see that your comment was about 50. Sorry that I missed that. Carry on. Was trying to understand why ya would want to try such a slow powder in .223.
