Question on change of address and buying firearms

I recently moved (same city, county, etc). Sent in all the required change of address forms to the state, but CO does not send a new license, they just tell you to write the new address on the back of your license.

My question is, am i going to have problems buying a new firearm if my license has my hand written address on it? If I fill out the 4473 with my current address, and my license has my old address on it with handwritten new address on the back, is that going to cause someone to prevent the purchase?

I am looking at a couple of new purchases, and I would hate to have it complicated by this trivial issue.

Any thoughts or comments from any FFL's here?

Yes. I just ran into this twice. You need an official state document stating your new address. I would go down to the local hunting license place and buy a habitat stamp for $5 and it will show new address printed on it. take that and use that. its what I did and it worked every time.

i got married in April and bought a new gun in June which is when I ran into this. The next time I brought my hunting license with new address and bought 2 guns without any questions.

I haven't had any problems with my address written on the back of my DL and I've purchased more than a handful of firearms, I even have a couple of CL3's get approved.

No need for any additional documentation... The official DMV procedure for updating address is as you described so you are good to go.

I went to an ATF seminar a few yrs. back and the same question was asked, the agent confirmed that writing new address on the back was sufficient proof for current address. (as long as you have filled out and mailed in the change of address form to DMV)

I ran into this at Gander Mtn. (it was the only place in town that had the rifle I wanted). They refused to sell me the rifle with the change of address on the back of my DL. I had to go to the service desk and get a Habitat Stamp. At the gun counter they deducted the $5 cost and knocked an additional 10% off the rifle. I've purchased numerous guns at other dealers with the same change of address without issues. Last time I buy at GM.

I've run into this issue a couple of times and the retailer asked for my vehicle registration or a utility bill to show my current address.

Sportsmen's Warehouse wouldn't sell to me as I had just moved and had written my new address on the back of my license.

He told me to do just as Joe suggested, buy a Wildlife Stamp ($5) at the front of the store and put my new address on it.

My FFL told me its because the ATF recently changed the rules and requires a state issued ID with your current address on it.

I have moved 3 times since I moved to Colorado so the address on my license is very old ... thankfully the address written on the back comes off every once in a while from friction in my wallet so I've just rewritten the new addresses each time.

My FFL took my CHL as a legitimate second ID.
