Default Nothing to do with firearms (Itunes related)

I have a TON of music on ITunes.... A lot of it is "doubles". I know how to view doubles, but how do I delete them? They both have the same format, etc it seems but when I try to delete one and play the other, it won't work and vice versa. The little "!" icon pops up. If there is nothing I can do about it, is there a way to "hide" the doubles? I already have millions of titles, I don't need 2 million because of the doubles...

Hope that makes sense, can anyone help?

I just got an iPod and am new to the whole iTunes deal but I'll give it a whirl.

I had one album that I entered into my library twice. They were the same format from what I could tell. I just deleted every other one and it worked out for me.

I don't why it happened but I had a bunch of songs that the "!" symbol popped up on. Alls I had to do was tell iTunes where the music was located and then it was all good as in the "!" went away and I could listen to those songs once again.

I apologize if this is not helpful to you. I'm hoping to learn a thing or two from this thread also.

I delete them thru itunes since that is where the duplicates are. In the windows folder, there are no duplicates.....

Very unfortunate. I had the same problem when transfering my library, 7000 songs turned into twice that with doubles.

There is software to find and erase the duplicates (duperaser, copybug or somethin like that).

I dont believe in paying for stuff that I can do myself, so heres what I found...
In Itunes, go to file and show duplicates,
right click on one copy and select properties,
note what properties the song has.
right click the same song ( the duplicate)
    select properties.

One will have much more information about the song you selected than the other. The one with more info is the original file, keep that one.

More than likely in your list the second duplicate is the copy.

    Now the fun begins

Hold ctrl and click on all the songs you wish to erase and erase them.

Dont cry until you have to highlight 7000+ songs to delete!

Good luck and let it be a lesson learned.

the Easiest way ( with a ton of songs ) is to remove all the songs from the library. then re add them all.

On Mac ( I assume the same on windows ) it will ask if you are sure you want to remove the song( songs) from the library say YES then a second warning pop up will ask if you want to move the file( files) to the trash say NO.

just select all and you can do it in one shot

then go to the folder that the files are kept and drop it in the itunes window it will re add all the songs

only problem with this is it will lose all your play lists.... but with a ton of song's it may be worth it .

This ^ is easy too. There is something you have to click under advanced, not sure where it is on windows to tell it to copy music onto the hard drive.

You have to go to Edit, then Preferances, click on the subtab Advanced.
The second check box will be " copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library.

Another thought to what Clublights said about deleting everything and putting it back. If you are getting the ! The. That file is missing, possibly only on The harddrive you got it from.

At thatpoint it will be gone (unless you can get the hard drive). You can try to salvage it from the IPod which also isn't fun.
